How Awareness Opened the Door
And the Invisible Called Me Through
The Power of Awareness in Hawaiian Huna
I heard a piece of music today that stopped me mid-moment.
I was sitting by the Aegean with my laptop open, about to write about the first Hawaiian Huna principle and the role awareness plays in it.
Instead, I found myself in tears in my seaside restaurant over a song I had only heard once before.
Not because I understood it.
Because something in me responded before thought arrived.
Earlier that morning, I had done a meditation around a desired future and asked for a sign that I had made a real connection.
Then the song came through the speakers.
When I heard it, something in me moved so strongly that I got up from my table and stood near the speaker, trying to record it over the sound of dishes and conversation.
The waitress came over smiling.
“That’s my favorite song,” she said. “I love everything about it—the music, the lyrics.”
She gave me the title.
I pulled it up on YouTube.
I read the words.
And I cried.
The timing felt exact.
Not symbolic.
Not vague.
Direct.
It matched what I had asked for that morning.
I did not need to interpret it.
I only had to notice it.
That, to me, is part of awareness: being present enough to recognize when something in life meets you clearly.
Ancient Mochlos
A few weeks earlier, during my retreat in Mochlos, I bought a small bracelet marked with the ancient Phaistos Disc and carried it with me to the Minoan artisan ruins nearby.
I sat on stones where people had once lived and worked thousands of years ago, overlooking the sea, and did a Hawaiian manifestation chant.
Something shifted in me there.
Later that day, I realized an important set of keys was missing from my bag.
Gone.
I did not search or retrace my steps.
Instead, I asked inwardly for clarity and immediately knew to return to the ruins,
even though it made no practical sense.
The keys had been securely placed in my bag and never removed.
Still, I followed that knowing.
And when I arrived at the entrance to the ruins, there they were.
Lying on the dirt at the threshold.
Right where entry becomes crossing.
No explanation that satisfies the mind.
Just experience.
The Door
The next morning, after breakfast, I found myself unable to open a locked glass door from the inside of a restaurant restroom.
A faulty mechanism.
Nothing remarkable in the door itself.
But in that moment, it felt like part of something I was already noticing.
Thresholds.
Openings.
Blockages.
Movement.
What stayed with me was not the door itself, but the way I experienced it.
By then, I was already paying attention differently.
And when awareness shifts, life can start to feel less random—more alive, more responsive, more in conversation with us.
That, to me, is the deeper invitation here.
I laugh about it now.
The lost keys.
The locked door.
The repeated song.
What matters is not forcing meaning onto any of it.
What matters is that my experience of it changed because my awareness had changed.
Attention changes experience.
And sometimes, when we are paying closer attention, life seems to answer in ways we did not expect.
What Awareness Changes
What I’m beginning to understand is that awareness changes more than what you notice.
It changes the way life feels.
The same world is still there.
The same problems.
The same uncertainties.
But something begins to shift in the way you meet it.
You start noticing…
Patterns.
Timing.
Openings.
The way life can sometimes feel more responsive when your attention, emotion,
and intention come into coherence.
Not every moment carries meaning.
But some moments do arrive carrying something unmistakable.
What one Huna colleague described as:
“a deeper way of seeing, a simpler way of being.”
That is what the Hawaiian Huna principles point toward:
not abstract ideas, but a lived shift in perception.
And this is where I want to begin.
In the next seven posts, I’ll be exploring the seven Huna principles, beginning with the First Principle. 💛
